Pool Lifeguard Course
Our Swimming Pool Lifeguard training covers all the essential skills and knowledge required to work in an aquatic facility including first aid, resuscitation, rescue techniques, swimming and water safety, aquatic supervision practices, basic technical pool operations and risk management. Participants also learn how to work with others by covering public relations, communication techniques and conflict management.
These skills not only allow successful candidates to work as pool lifeguards, but as qualified liver savers in other situations, as well as pool supervisors or managers, swim teachers and aquatic trainers or assessors.

The Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Skill Set – SISSS00129 is the minimum standard or mandatory requirement for many jobs including as a Pool Lifeguard in an aquatic facility. It is recognised as a national pool lifeguard qualification covering the following units of competency:
Prerequisite: HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Pool Lifeguard Skill Set – SISSS00129
Pool Lifeguard Certification
Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a Royal Life Saving Society – Australia Pool Lifeguard Certificate and an Australia Pool Lifeguard Licence after an on-the-job assessment.
Candidates also receive a Statement of Attainment with the units of competency listed above.
The Pool Lifeguard certificate is valid for 12 months.
Delivery Modes and Duration
The Swimming Pool Lifeguard Course utilises a combination of online learning modules and face-to-face training/ practical assessment sessions delivered by a qualified Royal Life Saving Trainer.
The practical assessment session is a 2-day course.
We can deliver courses for your organisation on site and at a time to suit your needs.
Lifeguard Course Online
As mentioned above, you can do part of your lifeguard certification online via self-paced training modules, allowing you to save time by completing some pre-learning online before attending a practical pool lifeguard training course with our instructor.
Lifeguard Renewal Course
Candidates who need to renew a lifeguard certification complete the same learning and assessment program. Because a lifeguard in Australia requires a high level of skill, judgement and fitness, ongoing training and renewal is important to ensure competence in preventing and responding to aquatic incidents.
Pool Lifeguard Course Assessment
Along with completing theoretical and practical lifeguard certification tests, participants will undertake an on-the-job assessment to demonstrate skills using authentic workplace equipment and documents.
In order to obtain the Pool Lifeguard Licence, candidates need to complete on-the-job assessments at their specific workplace and record these in a workbook for our assessor to evaluate as meeting all required standards.
Please note: The lifeguard training test requires a medium to high level of aquatic fitness in order to complete a range of practical scenarios and components.
Pre-requisites
The Pool Lifeguard Course requires a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid to enrol. A current Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Certificate that has been obtained in the last 12 months is required for renewal courses.
Candidates should be 16 years or older in the calendar year when they attempt the course and have a medium to high level of aquatic fitness. Participants need to be capable of performing CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
Recognition of prior learning is available for those who hold a current Bronze Medallion and/or First Aid certification.
